A free standing basin is a full height floor mounted piece with the pedestal built in, so there is no vanity and no storage underneath. It trades cupboard space for floor space and a cleaner look.
The plumbing has to suit it. The waste runs down inside the pedestal to a floor outlet, and most of these basins have no tap hole, which means a wall mounted faucet roughed into the wall behind.
